For over 60 years, Merck has encouraged and recognized high achievement by secondary students throughout New Jersey through its sponsorship of the Merck State Science Day Competition. Held in May of each year, the Competition consists of examinations taken by individuals and teams of high school students competing in biology, chemistry, physics and integrated sciences. The Merck Institute for Science Education partners with the New Jersey Science Teachers Association to enlist students in the contest.
The state's top four top-scoring students in biology, chemistry, physics, integrated science and advanced integrated sciences become known as Merck Scholars. The Scholars, their families and their science teachers are invited to spend a day at the Merck Rahway site. They meet with Merck researchers and enjoy a luncheon and reception in their honor. Following the reception, the scholars and their guests have the unique opportunity to tour the laboratory facilities, which are not open to the general public.
